Every once in a while some of us are lucky enough to encounter an entertainer who is about more than just music. Though a rare phenomenon, there are indeed a few artistes who have good music, sound values and principles, are well mannered, well-rounded and who truly stand for something positive. I-Octane is one such artiste and he truly epitomizes the phrase “High Energy, high performance.”

A Different Page…

In an industry where most people are striving for the glitz and glamour, I-Octane firmly believes that Jah put him on a ‘different page’.

“I’m called to a higher purpose. I’m not doing music just because I like melodies and I can rhyme. There has to be more to it than that. It’s a spiritual thing. I believe in words, sound, power. When people listen to my music, it has to affect them in a positive way. I want it to challenge them to view life from a different perspective. I want them to start believing in themselves that they can reach their highest level in life and accomplish their own purpose. Once I’m doing what I’m called to do, the Almighty will allow the fame and the fortune to come as well.”

Well when you hear a statement like that, it’s no wonder that this artiste is rapidly becoming more popular.  

Many people liken I-Octane to artistes such as Sizzla and Lutan Fyah, and though honored, he feels that creating his own niche and being different is important. He maintains that,

“In the long run, it’s the difference that works for you. That’s what brings in your originality. From you’re different, you have the opportunity to be a trendsetter. You can inspire and influence people. If you’re the same as everyone else, nothing sets you apart, you don’t stand out. What’s the point in that?”

Wow, an artiste with a difference. Can it get any better than that? Well, apparently when it comes to I-Octane, it does!!

The Role Model

Several of the younger artistes shy away from being counted as a role model. The responsibility and pressure that often accompany such a title is a deterrent for many young men. Not so for I-Octane. Though he never specifically set out to be a role model, it is a position that he has come to respect and embrace. He recollects that

“In the early stages, my focus was just on my talent, but over time the music and I became one and I started to see the real power of the words and the effect that it had on people. Naturally I began to be seen as a mentor and as an individual who inspired other people. I began to believe more in what I was saying and found that I started to change along the way. I didn’t want to be saying one thing and doing another. My type of music is righteous, conscious. I want to be able to represent what I sing so I try to be careful how I live my life.” 

Like many of the youth who look up to him, I-Octane came from very humble beginnings. Because finances were an issue he missed out on certain things such as getting a tertiary education and some of the luxuries that most parents desire for their children. However, in perfect I-octane fashion, he was able to use these experiences and turn them into a positive.

“Yes I had some disadvantages, but they forced me to adjust my attitude and make the most of what I had. It also taught me the value of things and to cherish the things that I had.”

This attitude is just one of the attributes that make this young man such a positive role model and is one that he wishes to pass on to his fans. The fact that he has chosen not to drink or smoke is just a bonus. Of that decision he simply says, “It’s just not my thing.”  

Hotta fire burning!!!

Even though he doesn’t smoke, I-Octane sure knows how to keep the fire burning!! In every performance, whether small or large, he delivers an excellent set every time and this has gained him wide appeal with audiences from every strata of society. His ability to communicate and inspire people regardless of their background has made him much sought after by show promoters worldwide. Add to that his intelligence, charm, and his boyish good looks and what you have is an artiste that stands for and produces excellence! His message to the youth?

“Wow, suh much tings I want to tell them, but definitely that you have to put the Almighty first. From yu pree Him in everything you’ll think twice when you’re making your decisions. You also have to really believe in yourself and your dreams. You more than anyone knows how special you are. You have to be self-motivated and be willing to learn and strive even in the face of difficulties. Finally, knowledge is the greatest thing. Educate yourself, read, enhance your brainpower. Once you’re doing that, nobody can hold you back!!” 

I-Octane is definitely the full package, and one that any business, company, or agency can be proud to be associated with. He is poised for greatness and the whole world is watching to see what will happen next. Can we expect more? “Of course” he says “It’s I-Octane! Mi haffi keep the fire blazing!! Look out!”
